Sean is a life long resident of Kitchener-Waterloo and resides in Waterloo with his wife and two children. Sean attended St. Jerome's High School in Kitchener and graduated from Kitchener Collegiate Institute. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree, Political Science, from the University of Waterloo. He has also completed the Master Manager program at Wilfrid Laurier University and has attended the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Sean has been extensively involved in the community throughout his life and is a recipient of the Canada 125 Medal for Community Service. In 1993, Sean was elected to the Waterloo Region District School Board as a Trustee. Sean has also served as City of Waterloo Councillor from 1997 to 2000 and a Region of Waterloo councillor from 1997 to 2003. Sean did not seek re-election to regional council in 2003 due to his candidacy in the provincial election.

From 1990 to 2003 Sean was the Executive Director of the Food Bank of Waterloo Region and currently works as a consultant. In addition to his numerous community commitments and experience Sean enjoys coaching minor hockey and soccer and was previously involved on the Executive of the Ontario Association and Canadian Association of Food Banks.
